Built in 1914, the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum encapsulates almost the entirety of Glen Carbon's history. Some residents remember this building as the schoolhouse with the fire escape slide that they would sneak into after hours. Others know it as the Village administration offices and police department with meetings held upstairs and prisoners held downstairs. Many remember this building as the library with bookshelves lining the hallways.
In 2014, the building's 100-year anniversary, this former schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the first to achieve such an honor in Glen Carbon. The Village of Glen Carbon is proud to share this building with you so it can continue serving residents and visitors for many years to come. Stop by to view the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum’s exhibits, original hardwood floors and tin ceilings, and the window where the fire escape slide sat.
