The Public Works Department is responsible for the operations and maintenance of 90 miles of water main and related equipment, over 85 miles of sanitary sewer main and 29 lift pumping stations.

Glen Carbon's Water Treatment Plant is located on Illinois Route 162 one quarter mile West of Illinois State Route 157. In 1996 the Village of Glen Carbon entered into agreement to purchase finished drinking water to be supplied to this facility. A 500,000 gallon clear well along with a 1 million gallon storage tank with related pumping and electrical components are used to effectively deliver water to Village homes and businesses. Water is pumped from the clear well and temporarily stored at the Village half million gallon elevated storage tower at the corner of Glen Carbon Road and Illinois State Route 159.

Sanitary Sewer

In 1997, the Village entered into an agreement with the Madison County Regional Wastewater District to convey wastewater from homes through connector mains to the regional wastewater facility in Granite City, Illinois. To help aid in this process 32 lift pumping stations are in place to accomplish this task. The entire operation is monitored by computer 24 hours a day. Information is reported and displayed on monitors, printed and the stored on hard drives for immediate reference and historical reference. If problems are noted in the wastewater monitoring process, officials are notified immediately through cellular notification.
